Alacabenzi Spores
$9.94 – $106.50Price range: $9.94 through $106.50
Alacabenzi is a Psilocybe cubensis strain rumored to be a cross between Alabama and Mexican genetics. Whether or not that hybrid origin is accurate, the result is a strain that produces remarkably large, symmetrical fruiting bodies and dark, consistent spore prints ideal for microscopy.
Description
Hybrid Heritage — Fact or Legend?
The Alacabenzi name is widely believed to reference a purported cross between a strain from Alabama and one from Mexico (the “benzi” possibly referencing a Mexican locale). Whether this hybridization story is historically accurate is difficult to verify — cubensis strains do not cross in the conventional plant-breeding sense, and what likely occurred was a mixing of cultures that resulted in a distinct phenotype being isolated. Regardless of the precise origin, Alacabenzi has earned its place in collections based on its own merits: consistent performance, large size, and excellent spore production.
Spore Profile
Alacabenzi spores are subellipsoid, measuring 12–15 × 8–10 micrometers, with moderately thick walls and dark purple-brown pigmentation. Prints are heavy and well-defined, with consistent pigment distribution. The germ pore is clearly visible and provides a reliable orientation landmark for photomicrography. Spore shape consistency within prints is high, indicating good genetic stabilization — an expected outcome for a strain that has been in continuous cultivation for many years.
Morphological Notes
The defining physical characteristic of Alacabenzi is its size and symmetry. Fruiting bodies tend to be large and well-proportioned, with thick stipes supporting broad, convex caps that can exceed 60 mm in diameter. Cap color is a warm caramel-brown, even-toned, without the irregular spotting or patchiness seen in some varieties. The overall growth form has an almost cultivar-like uniformity that distinguishes it from wilder, more variable strains. Colonization is moderately fast, and the strain fruits reliably at 22–26°C on a range of substrates including grain, straw, and manure-based mixes.
Research Notes
Alacabenzi is particularly useful for teaching about phenotype selection in fungi. Its uniform morphology demonstrates what happens when mycologists isolate and propagate specific traits over many generations of culture transfers. Comparing Alacabenzi’s consistency against a more genetically heterogeneous strain like Plantasia Mystery illustrates the effects of selective pressure on fungal populations in a visually compelling way.
